Indiana scoping out land for innovation park

INDIANA–The Indiana Economic Development Corp. is exploring land purchase options in Boone County for what local officials say could be a massive 4,000- 7,000-acre tech innovation park, not unlike the Research Triangle in North Carolina. The county’s location, between Purdue University and Indianapolis along I65, makes it attractive to high-tech companies in future-focused industries.

Helping foreign-born startup founders

MICHIGAN–Wayne State University and Global Detroit are partnering to help immigrant and international entrepreneurs launch high-growth startups in Southeast Michigan. Global Entrepreneur-in-Residence places foreign-born startup founders at universities to teach and mentor. The founders, in turn, become eligible for an H-1B visa, enabling them to launch and grow their companies in metro Detroit.

Kudos for Pittsburgh’s data practices

PITTSBURGH, PA—The city of Pittsburgh has received What Works Cities Certification for its use of data to guide decision-making and improve residents’ lives. What Works Cities Certification, a national Bloomberg Philanthropies initiative led by Results for America, has awarded certification to 55 U.S. cities for outstanding data practices since 2017. Cited in the certification are Pittsburgh’s open data platforms and the establishment of its Department of Innovation & Performance.

Tackling Smart Cities implementation

OHIO–Three Ohio-based companies have combined their resources and talents to tackle the challenges many cities face as they try to examine the merits of Smart Cities implementation. Cleveland Electric Laboratories (CEL), Eco Development, and LogiSync are all Ohio companies that possess capabilities in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and IoT solutions that remove many of the barriers for cities considering the adaptation of a Smart Cities approach.

Walmart invests millions in Wisconsin distribution center

MENOMONIE, WI–Walmart announced a multi-million dollar investment for their regional distribution center in Menomonie. The investment is part of a broader initiative with automated technology to continue modernizing Walmart’s supply chain network. The upgrades are expected to increase the speed, efficiency, and safety at which products are distributed. The first phase of the renovation will be completed by the end of 2022.
