Lowering manufacturer carbon footprints | UC prof to help with Mars research

Research to lower manufacturer carbon footprints

BLOOMINGTON, IN–Indiana University researchers are using artificial intelligence and machine learning to help small and mid-sized Indiana manufacturers lower their carbon footprints and train students for careers in the emerging field of energy analytics. Faculty in the IU Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering at IU Bloomington and the School of Engineering and Technology at IUPUI will develop advanced manufacturing data models and analytics applications that will recommend processes and protocols to manufacturing companies so they can reduce their energy consumption.

University of Cincinnati prof to help with research on Mars

CINCINNATI, OH–Dr. Andy Czaja, an associate professor in the University of Cincinnati’s department of Geology, will be helping with research on Mars involving the Perseverance Rover. Working with two of his students, Dr. Czaja will help to determine which samples to take from Mars, and which ones to bring back to earth for further study. The team will also be looking for possible evidence of life on Mars. “We can learn about the history of Mars, about the geologic history, what Mars was like billions of years ago early in its history, how much water it had and how long that water persisted on the surface, and why the planet changed from what we think it used to be,” Czaja told Spectrum News1.

University business accelerators growing

Fast Future COUNTRY–University business incubators (UBIs) are uniquely positioned to foster entrepreneurship by launching startups by professors, students, researchers, and local entrepreneurs. A lot of universities in Fast Future Cities are taking up that challenge and launching their own startup incubators. For example, the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign offers a technology business incubator called EnterpriseWorks and Carnegie Mellon University has the Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship, which runs 16 programs that help student entrepreneurs succeed, including funds, competitions, and labs.

We just heard about two more incubators in the works at Fast Future universities: The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will launch an incubator this fall that will help prepare 10 startups for angel and venture capital funding and the Michigan Innovation Headquarters will acquire the former College of Business building of Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan and convert the old classrooms into space for startups.
