DEARBORN, MI—According to Darren Palmer, Vice President, Ford Electric Vehicle Programs, the company is “looking at ways to bring the human connection in.” Ford will be outfitting its EVs with the internet’s most popular pastime since March 2020: online conference calling. Toward that end, Ford and Cisco have partnered to “unlock the browser experience” on the automaker’s infotainment system, and are developing a WebEx app capable of running natively on the HTML 5-centric OS.
CMU to launch space mission command center
PITTSBURGH, PA—Amidst all of its recent efforts in space tech innovation, Carnegie Mellon University will build a new space mission command center on campus, in the Gates Center for Computer Science. The new space will serve as a hub and equipment provider for the crews of upcoming space missions from Iris and MoonRanger, which are scheduled to launch this year and in 2023, respectively.
Innovation district comes to Appalachian State
BOONE, NC—Appalachian State University broke ground on a long-held goal and a valuable piece of its future — the Innovation District project. The goal is to broaden economic development opportunities for rural areas in Northwestern North Carolina. Phase one of development includes the Conservatory for Biodiversity and Education, which will serve as a vital link between the campus and the regional community through education, research and outreach.

NC Tech provider to work with Amazon on health platform
CARY, NC—Tech and consulting service provider Thread will be collaborating with Amazon Web Services to enhance the company’s decentralized clinical trials platform. With Amazon, Thread will design a machine-learning architecture and AI models that will automate the process for Amazon customers. Amazon Web Services helps pharmaceutical companies, biotechs, and contract research organizations with decentralizing clinical research.
Ag coop collaborates to bring robot to market
BLOOMINGTON, IL—Ag cooperative GrowMark will collaborate with Brazilian digital ag startup Solinftec to bring a new robot to market that provides precise field management for farmers. The robot’s neural network will feature detection algorithms that enable the scanning of crops for health and nutrition, as well as insects and weeds.
Manufacturing inno center coming to St. Louis
ST. LOUIS, MO—St. Louis Regional Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Center (AMICSTL), an organization created to establish a robust advanced manufacturing sector in the region, has tapped Saint Louis University and the University of Missouri–St. Louis to co-lead research and development for the venture. The two universities’ work in research and development will dovetail with the center’s efforts to bolster workforce development and increase production and prototyping capacity.
