Easing PPE demands National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory in Pittsburgh--which has been developing a new kind of respirator that would ease demand for N95s masks during the pandemic--has received a $14 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health. Double lung transplant on COVID patient In December, surgeons at OSU’s Wexner Medical Center Comprehensive Transplant Center successfully performed a lifesaving double lung transplant on a patient who recovered from COVID-19. Since then, they have performed three more lung transplants. Vaccines and kids Cincinnati Children’s is now testing Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine in children between the ages of five and 11, with a focus currently on getting the dosage right. Sanitizing vending machines An Iowa company has developed new sanitation tech: UV vending machines. The machines use UV rays but include safeguards such as a shielding that directs radiation to target surfaces and a shut off mechanism for when a consumer approaches the machine. COVID-19 innovation Minneapolis-based Bio-Techne Corporation today announced that its R&D Systems and Novus brands have been named winners of the CiteAb COVID-19 Innovation Award for its products that helped shape the life sciences sectors understanding of, or resilience to, COVID-19. Antiviral therapeutics Phytoption LLC, a startup in the Purdue Research Park, is looking for partners to help advance the development of antiviral therapeutics it says could fight against COVID-19 and other viral diseases.
