Cincy sunlight tech licenses to NASA spinoff
CINCINNATI, OH—Being inside too much can throw off our circadian clock, leading to trouble sleeping, overeating, and depression. Richard Lang, Ph.D., director of the visual systems group at Cincinnati Children’s, has been studying the role natural sunlight plays for over a decade. His research sparked the idea to install violet light in Children’s neonatal intensive care unit in 2021. Now Cincinnati Children’s is licensing the sunlight technology to a NASA spinoff.
Novartis to open gene therapy manufacturing site in Durham
DURHAM, NC—Swiss drug maker Novartis will begin building a 170,000-square-foot facility in Durham that will be responsible for manufacturing the company’s spinal muscular atrophy gene therapy. This Durham site is the second in the U.S. that the company has brought online to produce Zolgensma, labeled “the world’s most expensive drug,” at $2.1 million per dose.
4C Medical Technologies lands huge round of funding
MAPLE GROVE, MN—4C Medical Technologies, a medical device company developing minimally invasive technologies for structural heart disease, has closed on $35M in Series C financing. The round was led by MicroPort CardioFlow Medtech Corporation. The company intends to use the funds to develop its AltaValve TMVR technology and expand the treatable patient population using its streamlined procedures.
