Skin patch can detect opioid overdose

BLOOMINGTON, IN–Feng Guo and Ken Mackie, two researchers from Indiana University, are developing a wearable device that can both detect and treat an opioid overdose as it happens. Their microneedle skin patch project is in its early stages, but recently received $3.8 million in federal funding.

PITTSBURGH, PA–And on the topic of opioids: Using a machine-learning algorithm, researchers, including ones from Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh, were able to predict opioid overdose derived from Pennsylvania Medicaid data. The algorithm might be valuable for overdose risk prediction and stratification in Medicaid beneficiaries.

World’s largest MedTech accelerator includes Fast Future startups

Fast Future COUNTRY–The MedTech Innovator has announced its top 50 startups selected for the 2022 cohort in the tenth year of the world’s largest MedTech accelerator program. Three of the medtech innovators are in Fast Future country: surgeon-focused MedTech company Lazurite Holdings of Cleveland, OH; PopCheck Technologies of Memphis, TN, which focused on post-operative tech; and TrackX, based in Hillsborough, which provides instrument tracking technology.
