New colorectal cancer imaging tool
ST. LOUIS, MO–Screening for colon cancer relies on human visual inspection of tissue during a colonoscopy procedure but doesn’t detect and diagnose subsurface lesions. Researchers at Washington University in St. Louis are developing a colorectal cancer imaging tool that uses optical coherence tomography (OPT) and machine learning to better screen for colon cancer. In the initial studies, the technique provided more information about an abnormality than surface-level, white-light images currently used by physicians.
Safer tanning
CINCINNATI, OH–MC1R Ventures, a startup founded by a professor of dermatology in the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, is developing a topically applied product to initiate sunless tanning, which could have medical and cosmetic applications. MC1R came out of the UC Venture Lab pre-accelerator program, operated by the Office of Innovation, which provides talent, support, and funding to help launch new companies.
Nursing students still benefitting from simulation tools
DETROIT, MI–While the pandemic necessitated virtual simulation learning for nursing students, it remains a big part of their education. An NCSBN national stimulation study showed that simulation is as effective for students as being in a clinical setting with a clinical instructor. HealthLeaders interviewed Erik Carter, the director of undergraduate programs for Wayne State’s College of Nursing about the types of simulations he uses in nurse education.
