Cleveland Clinic spinout gets $33M

CLEVELAND, OH–Biotech Centerline Biomedical announced the closing of a $33 million Series B equity financing. The round was led by Cleveland Clinic with participation by GE Healthcare, RIK Enterprises, JobsOhio, Jumpstart Ventures and G2 Group Ventures. The funding will help propel the company into new surgical applications.

WARSAW, IN–The Kosciusko Economic Development Corp. is launching a program designed to grow the number of medical technology startups in the Warsaw area. The Medical Technology Accelerator Studio aims to complement and advance the existing product development and manufacturing capabilities in the city, which is billed as the Orthopedic Capital of the World.

Kansas researcher wins Alzheimer’s prize

LAWRENCE, KS–Russell Swerdlow, M.D., director of the University of Kansas Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, has been recognized as one of 10 Oskar Fischer Prize winners. The prize, aimed at expanding society’s understanding of the causes of Alzheimer’s disease, is the world’s largest of its kind, with $4 million awarded across three categories. As an Oskar Fischer Prize recipient, Swerdlow will receive $300,000.

Fitness tech startup backed by NFL pros

INDIANAPOLIS, IN–Fitness tech startup Strive has raised a $6 million Series A round that included backing from NFL Pro Bowl running back Jonathan Taylor of the Indianapolis Colts. Troy Smith, former Ohio State quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner, also participated in the round. Strive makes sensors that can fit into compression clothing and analyze strength and function to improve muscle performance.
