NASHVILLE, TN—Two-year-old healthcare firm CareBridge has closed on a $140 million round of funding led by existing investor Oak HC/FT, with participation from managed Medicaid plans Optum Ventures, CVS Ventures, Anthem Inc. and HLM Venture Partners. CareBridge’s services are aimed at assisting low-income seniors, disabled people, and others in need of long-term care with daily tasks.

Madison startup makes sleep data software

MADISON, WI—Startup EnsoData, which makes software that can analyze data generated by several sensors attached to patients who undergo sleep studies, has landed a $20 million investment led by Inspire, a company that makes sleep apnea tech. The funding comes after EnsoData recently received its second U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance.

Advanced tech center comes to Washington University School of Medicine

ST. LOUIS, MO—Washington University School of Medicine has launched a new $15 million center that will use advanced tech to develop and analyze biomarkers related to diseases like diabetes, breast cancer, and Crohn’s disease. The Mass Spectrometry Technology Access Center (MTAC) at McDonnell Genome Institute is part of several renovation projects at the university.

Flavored vapes linked to deadly health conditions

LOUISVILLE, KY–Some flavors used in vapes, like cinnamon or diacetyl (artificial butter flavoring), have been linked to serious and even deadly health conditions like cell death and “popcorn lung” — damage caused by airway inflammation. The University of Louisville has received $3.6 million from the National Institutes of Health and the FDA to study the effects of flavorings used in vapes and electronic cigarettes. The university’s New Vision of Health campus at the UofL Christina Lee Brown Envirome Institute will do the research.
