OLATHE, KS–Artio Medical has closed on a hefty $28 million fund, bringing its total investments to $74 million. The company, which develops innovative products for the peripheral vascular, neurovascular, and cardiology markets, will use the funds to support U.S. commercialization efforts for its recently cleared Solus Gold Embolization Device and to accelerate the development of Artio’s broad portfolio of products.

Startup to develop platform for biomedical research

MINNEAPOLIS, MN–Startup Flywheel, which makes a data management platform for biomedical research, has landed a multi-year $829,000 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The grant will focus on providing a centralized, cloud-based research infrastructure to an international cohort of researchers led by King’s College London. The distributed research teams will use Flywheel to curate, share, and analyze MRI scans of young children between the ages of 0 and 24 months across 25 LMICs located in Africa and Asia.

Vanderbilt subject of $1M gift from Dolly Parton

NASHVILLE, TN–Entertainer Dolly Parton has donated $1 million to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center for pediatric infectious disease research in children. Parton made a previous $1 million gift to VUMC in April 2020 in honor of her longtime friend, Naji Abumrad, MD, professor of Surgery, to increase scientific knowledge and advance the battle against COVID-19 by supporting research teams working urgently to perfect treatments and cures.
